We hear a lot about how limiting beliefs hold us back in life and business. You know the thoughts: "You're not good enough. Who are you to think so big? You're an imposter." Those thoughts have visited me loads of times on my entrepreneurial journey. But did you know that there's another type of limiting belief that is even trickier to identify and has the same effect of blocking our business growth? They're called: false assumptions. False assumptions are a different kind of limiting belief. And we can hold false assumptions around our prices, around having a fancy website and professional photos, and around advertising, marketing, and growing our audience. In this episode of She Grows, we explore the most common false assumptions I see in soul-guided entrepreneurs, how these false assumptions are different than painful thoughts, and how to release these assumptions and instead tap into your truth. We dive into how to get guidance from your higher self to call in success and prosperity and how any decisions you base on false assumptions will eventually halt and thwart your growth.
In today’s episode we explore:

[00:00:00] Hey, this is Allyson Scammell and today's episode is an important one. It's a topic that has really come to my attention in recent months, in my own business and with clients, and that is making false assumptions. And I think we all do it more than we realize. And false assumptions are different than limiting beliefs.
They have a lot of similar characteristics, but they are different. And what makes false assumptions trickier is that they are less obvious, more hidden, more tucked away in our subconscious. And they have the effect of blocking our business growth. So in today's episode, we're going to explore the difference between a false assumption and a limiting belief.
We'll go through the common false assumptions you may be making about your business that will limit your growth and how to release these assumptions and instead to tap into the truth. We'll end on a challenge that will help you to identify and release any false assumptions you may be making so that you can become the owner of a prosperous dream business.
So you're going to want to stay with me until the end. So I think this is an incredibly timely and important topic. So if you're here tuned in you, my friend are in the right place. False assumptions, have a direct impact, usually negative, on the growth of our business. They're also often something that we don't see or notice, even for those of us who are like black belts in mindfulness and watching our thoughts.
And we have a well-oiled thought practice and we know how to dissolve limiting beliefs and all the things [00:03:00] false assumptions have a different flavor. And we often miss them. So what is a false assumption anyway? The dictionary definition, one of them anyway, is that a false assumption is an incorrect proposition that forms the basis of an argument.
And I like this definition, and I'm going to tell you why, because that's exactly what we do in our business. We make an incorrect belief about something like this is the way it has to be. And then you build your business around something that is not correct. And I'm going to give you a ton of examples of how we do this in just a minute.
But before we go into that, I want to talk about how false assumptions are different than limiting beliefs. Both limiting beliefs and false assumptions are based around [00:04:00] belief systems or thought systems that we think are true. We hold them to be true. "I'm not good enough." That feels true. And the truth of most limiting beliefs, if not all of them is that they are indeed not true.
If you are a student, for example, of Byron Katie, she teaches that all thoughts are not true or any thought that you feel like is true. The opposite of that thought is also true. And she's not the only thinker in history to hold these thoughts. So let's just assume the sake of this conversation that no limiting belief is true and that no false assumption is true because we're saying it's false.
We're saying it's an untrue assumption by labeling it a false assumption. So a limiting belief comes to us [00:05:00] normally from our childhood, from social conditioning, from past lifetimes and they are stories we tell ourselves about something again, getting back to that great example. I am not good enough. We are socially conditioned.
It comes from the collective. The collective is wounded. With this thought system that I am not good enough. And then the second you do your thought work and you whittle away at that thought and you finally dissolve it normally then here into the territory of "I am too much. I am just too much."
That's another wound from the collective that we get from our ancestors, from our childhood, from past lifetimes. And obviously there are a million different limiting belief systems out there. We all have them. We all brought them with us into this lifetime from past lifetimes and they get [00:06:00] most of our limiting beliefs actually do not have an origin of this lifetime.
I would suggest most of our limiting beliefs come from a different lifetime and we've just carried them forward. And our job is to be mindful of them. And normally we can spot a limiting belief because we're feeling a painful emotion. If you're feeling any painful emotion at any time, you can always stop.
And just ask the question, why am I feeling this way? Why. And there's always going to be a thought triggering that emotion, but with false assumptions, you don't necessarily always have painful emotions to be your guidance system to keep you aware. Sometimes you're just like, that's just how it is a business.
So I have to stay small. I'm assuming that's just how it is. So I don't feel pain. I'm just making this [00:07:00] assumption. But the problem with the assumption is that it's halting your business growth. And guess what, when your business growth is thwarted or there's a roadblock that triggers a painful emotion, defeat, frustration, anger.
And so then. You say, all right, I'm frustrated my business didn't grow as I wanted it to. What's the thought you often don't go to the false assumption because you think the false assumption is true. It is the basis of your argument. It is the incorrect proposition that is forming the basis of your argument.
So you don't go to the assumption. You go to something else, "I'm not good enough. I don't deserve it." All those things and all those things may be true. You might be going to the right limiting belief that needs your attention and needs to be dissolved so you can return to your truth, but you can't miss the false assumption either.
You got to get [00:08:00] both if they're both present. So moving on, what are the common, false assumptions that show up in business? And I'm going to go to the ones that I see most among soul guided or spiritual women entrepreneurs, because I think we have a certain flavor of assumptions that we like to go to.
Very often we make tons of assumptions and I'm guilty of all of these things. So I'm sharing what I've seen in my life and with clients, and that is false assumptions around prices. Here are some examples. I can't raise my prices that much in one year. And trust me, I'm leading with this one, because this is a false assumption I made for a very long time about my business and it thwarted my business growth.
I had a year where I had raised my prices a few times throughout the year, and I realized. [00:09:00] That with my last price raise for the year, my prices would be raised 400% in the calendar year. So that means in December of that year, I was charging 400% more for my services than January. And my false assumption was I can't do that.
I can't increase my prices by that much. In one year, it's not done in business people don't do it. That was a false assumption. So what that assumption did was make me say, I couldn't raise them to the price that felt aligned. I couldn't raise them to that level of results. I knew I was helping people achieve in their lives.
That price that felt was aligned to my truth. And that level I wanted to show up as because every time we raise our prices, we show up at that higher level, I was [00:10:00] ready to show up at that level. I knew that I was creating huge value in people's lives. But I sold myself short and I kept myself small because I made the false assumption that I can't increase my prices by that much in one year.
And I see this all the time with my clients. Here are some other false assumptions. I just raised my prices. I can't raise them again. I can't raise my prices by so much in one jump. I just raised my prices. So it will take a while to call in new clients at the new rates. False assumptions and yes, you can go to market research.
You can go to industry averages. It's a good idea to check in with that stuff, but you, my friend are an outlier. You are a soul guided entrepreneur. You are led by your higher self. Your higher [00:11:00] self is going to lead you to alignment is going to lead you to truth and sometimes your truth. And your alignment is on par with industry averages.
Sometimes it's below industry averages, especially if you are at the start of your journey and sometimes it's above and even way above industry averages. What matters. Is your truth. What matters is your alignment? What matters is what your higher self is calling you towards? Here are some more false assumptions about audience growth.
You have to spend a lot of money on advertising to grow your audience or get new leads. Now I'm a believer in eventually, if it feels good to you, if your higher self is calling it of you to eventually invest some money in advertising. [00:12:00] But it is a false assumption to think you have to, in order to grow, there's a whole thing, a whole school of thought called human to human marketing.
And it's all about growing your business through human connection without advertising. So depending on your business goals, sometimes human to human marketing is the exact way to go, to get new leads and to grow. And not through paid advertising. You have to be on social media to grow your audience. You have to have a podcast, you have to use Facebook ads.
You have to have an email automation. You have to have a mailing list. You have to post on social media all the time to grow. All false assumptions. I also notice a lot of false assumptions about the look of your business. I have to spend a [00:13:00] lot of money on a fancy website, professional photos, a branding expert.
My website has to look fancy and elite in order for me to call in high value clients. If you notice the start of nearly all of these assumptions, I just named for you. I started with, I have to, or I should. So whenever you hear those words I have to, or I should, there is likely a false assumption in there somewhere about your business.
Now it doesn't mean that any of those things I just listed as examples, aren't perfect for your business. Maybe Facebook ads are perfect for your business and what you want to do. Maybe establishing an email automation is perfect. So how do you know if it's perfect for your business or you're making a false assumption?
Anytime you say I have to do anything. So getting back to Facebook ads, I have to invest in Facebook [00:14:00] ads to grow my business. That is a false assumption right there, because you can grow your business a lot of other different ways. A lot of other different paid advertising is out there as well as a lot of other non-paid
Strategies to grow an audience. So if you're holding on that belief, I can't grow unless I spend hours on end figuring out Facebook ads. And the thought of that makes me feel like nailing my fingers to the table because it seems so painful then I think you are in the middle of a bad, false assumption.
Maybe Facebook ads. Aren't the right thing for you for right now. Or maybe it's time for you to invest in a Facebook ads manager. So how do we know, how do we get to our truth? It always starts with noticing our emotions. So if we're feeling down or disappointed or frustrated or any sort [00:15:00] of painful emotion about the business, then why, where are these thoughts coming from and spend a minute or two really identifying the thoughts and see if in your thoughts you have a have to or a should.
I have to, or I should. And if you identify that there's likely a false assumption in there. So what I want you to do in those moments is spend a second to feel the feels. So give yourself permission for 60 to 90 seconds to feel the disappointment, defeat, frustration, anger, fill in the blank. Once you feel the emotional waves starting to come down, it's deep breaths, release.
Releasing with each deep breath and pivoting down to your heart space. So you can access the voice of your higher self, your intuition to guide you to your truth, the truth about what your business needs, the truth about [00:16:00] where you should be placing your focus. So going back to, I want to grow my audience and I invite you not to focus in on the, how.
How do I grow my audience? It's a fair question, but when it comes to communicating with the higher self, I like to ask my higher self, what should my focus be? So I want to grow my audience. What should my focus be for today? And maybe your higher self does say Facebook ads, maybe your higher self says it's time to invest an hour a week
in learning Facebook ads. So then all of a sudden something just opens up with guns like that. Okay. An hour a week. I can do that. That's interesting. I'm curious about how that will feel. That feels a lot better than the false assumption I had that in order for me to do Facebook ads, I'm going to have to spend 20 hours [00:17:00] a week.
Struggling and slogging away at it, but hmmm, I could devote an hour a week to it. Yeah, that feels good to me. Ooh, alignment. It feels good. That means we are in alignment. That means we are getting closer to our truth. And when it comes to your prices, I want you to do something with me right now. I want to do an exercise with you right now.
Think about your highest priced offering just for a second. Go ahead and think about that and think about the price you're charging. Just tune into the energy because money is energy. Try to tune into the energetic frequency, just set the intention to do this. Without overthinking you're tuning into the energetic frequency of the monetary value [00:18:00] of your highest priced offering.
Okay. Once you're in the frequency, that energetic frequency, how does it feel? I just did a lot of work around this and it's serving as the inspiration for this podcast episode. So mine feels pretty spot on, but if yours feels very comfortable Oh, it's just easy. If you feel like you're square in the middle of your comfort zone, your prices are not high enough.
If you feel stressed like, Oh, I could never represent this energy. This price with confidence, your prices are, might be too high. So what you're looking for is an energy that feels full feels very full. And you just feel like you're knocking on the edges of your comfort zone. You're pushing your comfort zone out, but you're not too far in, and [00:19:00] you're not over the edge.
That is where you want your premium prices to always be. And once your prices feel easy, it's time to raise them. So as you're in this frequency, I want you to also identify the thoughts. Are there any shoulds or have tos associated with your pricing? I should raise these. I should decrease these. These are too high because I'm not bringing in clients.
That's a definite false assumption right there. So once you identify all the thoughts, all the limiting beliefs and false assumptions. Identify them all. Then ask yourself what emotions specifically we're looking for Painful emotions are these thoughts and assumptions triggering? Spend 60 to 90 seconds fully [00:20:00] immersed in those emotions.
Pause, whatever you're doing. Get quiet and feel the feels then deep breaths. Big inhales and exhales pivot down to the heart space. What is the truth? Dear higher self about my prices. Are they in alignment? Ask yes, no questions. I'm getting a yes for mine, but had I asked this question three months ago, I would have gotten a no.
And I could ask my higher self, this question again in six months. And they might say no, it's time to change them again. So this is a great question to always be checking in with higher self am I in alignment with my prices? And if you get to know where do I need to place my focus to get into alignment?
[00:21:00] What are the false assumptions I'm making about my prices? How can I release those assumptions and tune back in to my truth? Because it is your truth. That is always going to guide you to the next level of your business, to your next level of success, to the prosperous soul led heart led business that you dream of owning.
Only your truth led by the voice of your higher self can help you to find the alignment to call that success and prosperity into your experience. Any decisions you base on incorrect propositions is eventually going to lead you to a place of non-alignment. And that is going to halt and [00:22:00] thwart your growth, and it's going to feel crappy at the same time.
So my challenge for you this week, dear friends is to get out a piece of paper and title it my business. And then I want you to say for my business to be successful and prosperous, I have to. And write, or just stream of consciousness, write it all down. I have to show up as my best self. I have to invest in Facebook ads, whatever it is, I have to charge low prices, all the half twos.
And then I want you to go through each and everyone. And ask yourself, how does this thought make me feel? And for all the ones that trigger some sort of painful emotion, there is likely some sort of false assumption in there and of the false assumptions you identify. [00:23:00] Go through them one by one seal, the feels deep breaths, and then get some guidance about that assumption from your higher self, ask your higher self to bring you back and guide you.
Back to your truth. Oh, that's all I have for today. My dear friends. I want to thank you so much for listening. I'm so grateful for you.
